Origin of Plywood and Plywood sheets

Plywood is a material which is glued together having their different wood grain layers rotated 90 degrees to one another. Plywood came to existence in 1797, when Samuel Bentham laminated several layers of veneers with the glue to make a thicker material which is now called as plywood. Bentham has many other inventions to his credit one of them being shipbuilding.

Plywood sheets are used by artists today as support to paintings, replacing the traditional canvas or carboards. Plywood sheets are made to use in various forms some of them will be discussed in this segment too.

6 Main Uses of Plywood sheets:

Plywood, as mentioned, is a timber product which is made a thick board by gluing many layers of thin sheets of wood veneers. Plywood sheets are now very commonly used in building the furniture, decorating the surroundings and for roofing and flooring too.

Here are 6 major areas where the Plywood sheets are used extensively:

  1. In many countries which are very prone to natural calamities like earthquake or cyclones or high winds, plywood sheets are used as an exterior wall sheathing(due to its flexible property), preventing any vertical or horizontal shifting to the roofs making the frame structures intact.

  2. As it is a well-known fact that wood paneling is not very durable the major reason being the termites, therefore, now plywood sheets are often used for wood paneling and framing interior walls. In many cases, to give a better finish very high-grade plywood sheets are being used that can be at times painted to stained to give that natural wooden finish.

  3.  Plywood is now commonly used in sheathing roofs and floors. On floors, plywood’s are spread in tongue-and-groove edges that act very durable and don’t moves or shifts even when the floor is loaded.

  4. Plywoods are one of the favorite building materials for the constructors in recent times. With its flexibility, termite-proof, and durable qualities constructors and contractors use plywood sheets in various forms and ways.

  5. Plywood is a blessing in the furniture industry recently. To make the furniture look class-apart high-grade Plywood sheets are being used and the rest of the area of that furniture is most often covered with comparatively low-grade plywood sheets.

  6. Plywood sheets are majorly used in constructing cabinets. Be it for the new cupboard or the kitchen shelves or for that corner of the office room, almost every cabinets are being given a finishing touch-up using different and artistic looking plywood sheets.

Different types of Plywood sheets:

There are different types of Plywood sheets which are used and these are as follows:

  1. Softwood Plywood sheets: Softwood plywood are often used for roof sheathing, exterior frame sheathing, and sub-flooring construction works.

  2. Hardwood Plywood Sheets: These plywoods are made with a minimum of three to a maximum of seven layers with hardwoods like birch, maple, oak, and walnut.

  3. Aircrafts Plywood Sheet: These plywood sheets are the most durable ones which are capable of resisting moisture and heat. This kind of plywood can be found in projects that need woods of maximum strength, like in airplanes, boats, and furniture that is meant to handle a lot of weight.

  4. Exterior Plywood Sheets: These plywood sheets are designed to resist wind, water, and different weathers. Exterior plywood sheets are made with several layers of veneers glued together making them a good choice when some exterior construction or sheathing is required.

Apart from these, there are other forms of plywood sheets too, like marine Plywood sheets, composite woods, fiberboard and many more. Every plywood sheet has its own features and qualities which are used in varied purposes.
